Reviews are your ranking, your pricing power, and your booking conversion in one number. Top hosts don't get lucky with reviews — they run a system. Here's the math, then the machine.
On a 5-point scale, a 4-star review is not "good" — it's a hit. If you're sitting at 4.9 across 20 reviews, a single 3-star drops you to about 4.8, and you'll need a long streak of perfect 5s to climb back. Platforms treat sub-4.7 as a warning zone. The game is preventing 4s, not just avoiding 1s.
You're not writing to the reviewer — you're writing to the next 500 people who read it. Formula: thank them, address the specific issue without excuses, state what you changed, keep it to 3–4 sentences, zero defensiveness. A gracious response to a harsh review builds more trust than another 5-star.
ACTION: Read your last 10 reviews and your competitors' worst 5. List every complaint theme — that's your prevention checklist.
